Be Careful What You Sing

How can we sing….. That we are “Standing on the Promise” when we are rarely even sitting on the premises (Hebrew 10:23-25) That we have “Victory in Jesus” when we are AWOL from his army (2 nd Timothy 2:4) “When We All Get To Heaven” when we can’t even get to church (Hebrew 10:38-39) “I Want To Be a Worker” when we refuse to volunteer for anything (Titus 3:14) “I Love You Lord” when we don’t obey his commands (John 14:15) that there is “Sweet Sweet Spirit in this Place” when it’s full of gossip and bickering (Galatians 5:15) That “I’m Not ashamed to Own my Lord” when we never talk to others about him (2 nd Timothy 1:8) That “I’ll Be a Friend to Jesus” when spend more time with the world (James 4:4) “There is a God” if we deny him with our actions (Titus 1:16) You can sing a lie just like you can tell a lie. Make sure what you are singing in really what you are doing. Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishi...

I Hear Voices

I often hear voices in worship.  No, I’m not going crazy.  No, it’s not that people are bad at whispering.  It's during the singing.  It’s not, however, the people present. The voices I hear are in my head and some are the voices of people that long since passed.   Let me explain before you think that ‘I’m not crazy’ is a mistake.  When we sing certain songs, I remember back to the church I grew up in. Some of the members there; some of our song leaders.  It might be the twang as they sang about ‘ the blood drawn from Immanuel’s veins’ . Or the passion in a voice when they proclaimed ‘ sing and be happy’ . The voices of people I grew up watching praising the Lord and setting an example that still comes back to me today Speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord Ephesians 5:19   Music has a funny effect on memory.  I can’t remember what ...

What Are You Singing?

Over the years I will often times have song leaders that will ask me the topic of my lessons so that they can pick song that will fit, especially the invitation song.  I glad they do but I’ll admit that I don’t make it easy with on title alone [1] .  The invitation song can be that tipping point that might make someone respond. A song that flows along with the message can be very effective in that process.    However, I noticed that many times people already have their own invitation song.   Not that we have everyone signing their own tune but rather the song of their heart and mind that is influencing their response.   Your see some are singing, “ I Shall Not Be Moved ”.  No matter what the lesson was about, no matter how important it is that they make a change, they are firmly planted where they are, refusing to budge.   For some their invitation song is “ Farther Along ”. The message may have hit hom...

Don’t Sing To Me Of Anything

There was a church where the preacher and the song leader were not getting along. As time went by this began to spill over into the worship service. The first week the preacher preached on moving forward and letting go of the past. The song leader led the song " I Shall Not Be Moved ". When he preached on how we should pay our debts, the song leader led " Jesus Paid it All ". When he preached on gossip, the song leader led the song " I Love to Tell the Story ."  With all this going on, the preacher became very disgusted and told the congregation during the evening sermon that he was considering resigning. The song leader led " Oh Why Not Tonight" ? As it came to pass, the preacher did indeed resign. The next week the preacher informed the church that Jesus was leading him elsewhere; the song leader led " What a Friend We Have in Jesus" .   This may be a funny story but in reality when brothers bring their personal differe...

Lyrically Challenged

An article I ran across drove home the point that we need to think about what we sing. It read: “ Alas the area of our singing has become a trysting place for me. I’ve spent many a direful night, rent asunder, with the ebon pinion brooding o’er the vale. What e’er betide, the bowers will not fail, even from ether-plains. It’s time to raise our Ebenezer’s and fain become gladsome. In mirth we have moaned, our suits distained. Now is the time to have our spiritual thirst assuaged as we fain the supernatural among the zephyrs wafting in the dale from days of yore.”   Many of these phrases, we have sung all our lives, but have never understood what they mean. When we sing not only do we praise God but teach and admonish one another (Colossians 3:17) If we never learn what we are singing, how can we be taught anything? If we simply overlook the phrases, we will never fully understand some of the most beautiful points of the songs we sing. Our singing should not be something we do with...
