Wrong Revenge

In September of 1982, relatively healthy people around the Chicago area began dying unexpectedly. Soon it was discovered they all had been poisoned with cyanide ingested from Tylenol they had taken. Panic ensued.   Tylenol was taken off the shelves and police searched for any clues to who had done the tampering. Authorities asked the public for any tips that might lead to the capture of the man involved.     A local bar owner Martin Sinclair knew a man by the name of Rodger Arnold who kept cyanide in his home.   So he reported it to the police and Arnold became a suspect. Arnold turned out to have nothing to do with the tampering but the media attention and the stress of the investigation made him suffer a nervous breakdown. He felt his life had been ruined by Sinclair.   So the next summer he waited outside the bar and when he saw Sinclair come out he went up and shot him. Only it wasn’t Sinclair, just a man that looked like him. He would serve 3...

Newton’s Third Revenge

Crazy hypothetical: Newton’s Third Revenge * You have been granted a wish by the revenge genie.  The revenge genie works like a regular genie except your wish is granted to a mortal enemy [1] .  Whatever you wish for them will come back on you as well in equal and negative fashion.  So if you wish for your enemy to drop dead, well then you will die in what kills them as well.  If you try and outsmart the genie by wishing for a million dollars for you enemy, it will come out of your effort(you'll make the money) but the both of you will receive it [2] . So you do benefit but your effort helps them at no cost. You have to make a wish. What do you wish for? *Crazy Hypothetical is a mental game that gives you a conditional choice that gets you thinking about a subject. I used these for several years as discussion starters in Bible class. This a good one for discussion and revenge and the danger grudges can have one the person that holds them. ...

Do Let Go

We all have been betrayed. Let down by those we have loved. Dismissed by those we struggled for. Forgotten by the ones that should have cared about us most.  The boss tells you that despite your hard work, jumping thought every hoop and bending over backwards to please him, he doesn't think your performance is good enough and is letting you.  You know that it was but you also know it doesn't matter.  The girlfriend that tells you that she doesn't think “we right together anymore”, that all the time and attention you gave wasn't enough.  You suspect there is another man but it doesn't keep you from hurting.  The friend that was once a confidant, a kindred spirit, someone you would have given your life for, has told your greatest secret, turned against you, and abandoned you when you needed them most.  You want to strike back hurt them like they hurt you but you know it not the right thing to do....

Take That!

George Crum was a chef at the Moon Lake Lodge in Saratoga Springs, New York in 1853. On evening, he became upset when a customer kept sending back his fried potatoes because they were too thick. Finally fed up with the patron, he decided to get revenge by slicing the potatoes so thin they could not be eaten with a fork and humble the proper man into using his hands like a commoner. But rather than revile the new dish, the man raved and soon these Saratoga Chips were all the rage. Now these concoctions we call potato chips are a billion dollar industry. His attempt at revenge, as so often happens, did not turn out as he suspected.    We all at times want to get back at those that wrong us, but the Bible teaches the revenge business is not our job (Romans 12:19-21) Very rarely does revenge get what we really want. We should  live to the expectations of God and let him sort those that do not.
