There Is Too Much Let Me Sum Up

Ever read one of those program descriptions for a movie or TV show that is completely true yet somehow completely inadequate. Oh, it may show some elements of the plot yet it doesn’t come close in encapsulating the whole. It may fill the space, but it doesn’t seem to make you want to stop down and watch.  I guess since you have only a few lines, it hard to get everything in. Could you imagine doing it so something as complex as God?

Yet in Exodus 34 we see the just that. In verses 6 and 7 we read:
"The LORD, the LORD God, compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in lovingkindness and truth; who keeps lovingkindness for thousands, who forgives iniquity, transgression and sin; yet He will by no means leave the guilty unpunished, visiting the iniquity of fathers on the children and on the grandchildren to the third and fourth generations."

God who made the worlds and is so far beyond us in every way, is somehow summed up in a most simple and profound way. He is Love. He is Truth. He cares passionately yet doesn’t act rashly. He is pure yet open to all. He is honest yet never seeks to hurt. He forgives yet punishes. He will be lenient yet just. He will let things go but nothing will escape his notice.

God here is describing himself yet those words would echo the sentiment of every author that writes about him in the Bible. We can only know God in what he reveals of himself to us. It described him to a tee yet the more we learn of him it doesn’t come close to the measure of the full breadth and depth of who He is.

The Lord God wants you to know Him. He has shown us His nature in His work, in the word, and in His Son.

If that doesn’t make you want to see more than nothing will.
