Some people speak because they have something to say. Others speak because they have to say something.
We live in a world
that has to comment. When we see folks do or say what we think they ought not,
we feel the need to rebuke, redress, and return volley.
We see how that is
working out for us.
It was tough for
Ezekiel as well. He lived in a day when it seemed everyone had lost their mind.
As a man of God, he wanted to set them straight but God did something to him.
He shut his mouth for him:
"Moreover, I will make your tongue stick to the roof of your mouth
so that you will be mute and cannot be a man who rebukes them, for they are a
rebellious house. "But when I speak to you, I will open your mouth and you
will say to them, 'Thus says the Lord GOD.' He who hears, let him hear; and he
who refuses, let him refuse; for they are a rebellious house.
Ezekiel 3:26-27
God knew Ezekiel would
want to throw in his two cents but he also knew the people were not going to
listen. So instead of a lot of wasted breath, Ezekiel was only going to get to
say what God had to say on the matter. The people could listen or ignore, and
that was all God was going to say on that.
Maybe we need something
similar. Stick our tongues to the roof of our mouths. Say less. And when we do
speak only say what God wants us to say. Say only what needs to be said not
everything we want to say.
We might end up
being dumb if we are not dumb.
When there are many words, transgression is unavoidable, But he who
restrains his lips is wise.
Proverbs 10:19
