Late To Worship

Sunday mornings can be a hectic time. Little ones to get out of bed. Clothes to be put on (and then taken off and others put on). Get breakfast, get your Bible, and get in the car, We ARE LATE. It’s a miracle we ever make it on time. Yet, that isn’t the late I’m talking about.   You see if we get to worship and the first time we thought to pray is the opening prayer, we’re late to worship. If the song is the first time we thought to praise God, we’ve been tardy. If our giving is just remembered as the plate is being passed we are somewhat overdue.   We worship on the first day of the week but we often confuse it for the last day. I’m not just talking about how we structure our calendars. I’m thinking of how worship is often tacked on to the end of our lives instead of being first and foremost. We can’t get to it because so many other things come before.   If we begin with the things of God first, the rest of life has a way of fitting in but if w...

Backspace Is Your Friend

Like a lot of folks, you're on the internet. You purse the blogs, check in on your group on Facebook and scan the twitter feed. Yet whether you are in cyberspace or in person in the real world, you should be acting like a Christian. So when the moment comes to make a comment on some post what should you do? Here is a handy checklist . Ask if you need to say what you are planning to say Here is a handy verse to consider: Ephesians 4:29 ” Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear ”. So if the comment is not wholesome, good for others, on topic, uplifting, and generous to the recipient, then don’t say it. Ask why you are saying what you are planning to say Here is another verse to consider: 2 Timothy 2:24-25 " The Lord's bond-servant must not be quarrelsome, but be kind to all, able to teach, patient when wronged...

I Don’t Want To Talk To Them

When making a call with the first telephones you didn’t dial up a number, you talked to an operator. These ‘hello girls’, as the operators were called, would then connect you to the person or business you wanted to contact. That is until a Kansas City undertaker named Almon Brown Strowger killed them all.   Well, not literally.    He did, however, invent the first automatic switch to route the calls and the first automatic telephone exchange to connect them. He called it the "girl-less, cuss-less, out-of-order-less, and wait-less telephone exchange. It made the position of ‘hello girl’ obsolete.   Why did an undertaker care about phone calls?   Strowger was convinced that one of the operators was diverting business calls away from him and to a rival undertaker who also happened to be her boyfriend.   His indignation made him want to do away with all telephone operators.   Her playing favorites doomed th...

Why? Why Not?

Baptism is one of the more debated and resisted ideas from scripture. When it comes to the pattern of salvation you don’t get many folks arguing about the need for repentance, or the necessity of belief or even the requirement of confessing Christ. Yet baptism is the point people resist.  Yet you don’t see that much in the first century. As I perused the book of Acts, I saw something else; “So then, those who had received his word were baptized; …” Acts 2:41  “But when they believed Philip preaching the good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were being baptized, men and women alike.” Acts 8:12  “And when she and her household had been baptized, she urged us, saying, "If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house and stay.". Acts 16:15  “And he took them that very hour of the night and washed their wounds, and immediately he was baptized, he and all his household.” Acts 16:33  ...
