No, No It’s Not Ok

My Father worked for Coca-Cola all his life so, around our house, Pepsi was a bad word. Even today, if a waiter asks for my drink order and I tell him a Coke product and he responds, “Is Pepsi Ok”, I barely can keep the disdain out of my voice when I say I don’t want that filth touching my lips. I guess if that is all there is and I am absolutely dying of thirst, it could work…. Once.  Just don’t tell my Dad.   It’s just not a substitute for the real thing.   In Hebrews 10:4, we read “ For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins ”. So why then were so many animals sacrifices offered then? It is all they had. It wasn’t as good, couldn’t live up to the task and didn’t cleanse completely, but they didn’t have what could.   We do.   The blood of Jesus completes. It’s the real deal. Only with his blood can we get what we so desperately want and even more desperately need. Forgiveness.   So why ...

All That Isn’t Enough

As rulers go, King Uzziah was about as good as it gets. In 2 nd Chronicles 26, we read about his rule. Taking the throne at sixteen years of age, he ‘ did right in the sight of the LORD’ . He defeated some of Israel worst enemies and forced others to pay tribute.  His fame spread across the region. He improved the infrastructure of the cities, was a friend to the farmer, and strengthened the military. He not only increased the manpower of his nation but brought in new technology and innovation as well.  You name it, religion, power, prestige, technology, defense, agricultural; he excelled in them all during his reign.      Except at the end.  In 2 Chronicles 26:16 we read: But when he became strong, his heart was so proud that he acted corruptly, and he was unfaithful to the LORD his God, for he entered the temple of the LORD to burn incense on the altar of incense.   He wanted to go and lead the worship. He was a king, a ...

Good Riddance

Every so often you will hear about a person that is trapped under their possessions. Some hoarder whose house is full of junk that they become entrapped in when a pile overturns. It’s sad but not unexpected. If you keep all that junk it's going to end up hurting you.    It’s not just stuff however that can entangle us. Sin, temptation, bad company, poor habits can all be piled on until one day it comes crashing down to our ruin.  … let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us , Hebrews 12:1   So why don’t we clean house? Get rid of the junk. Castaway the sin. End the bad relationship. Change the way we act. Our lives can be so much better without a lot of the things we cling to. There is such a thing as addition by subtraction. Things can be better without certain persons. Life can have more meaning when we eliminate worries. Blessing can ...

Hero Or Villain

Fritz Haber might have saved more lives than any other human history. Having one of the great minds in history for chemistry, figured out how to convert the commonest of chemicals —the nitrogen in the air— into a chemical fertilizer. With cheap industrial fertilizers now available, farmers no longer were limited to compost piles or dung to nourish their soil. Even by the time World War I broke out, Haber had likely saved millions from starvation, and we can still thank him for feeding most of the world’s 6.7 billion people today.   Yet Haber was a monster. He cared little about fertilizers. He actually pursued cheap ammonia to help Germany build nitrogen explosives. But his most deadly work was in chemical weapons. He created the formula, Haber law, to calculate just how much poison was need for how much time to be deadly. He created and oversaw the use of deadly gas attacks in World War I. His wife so horrified by his actions she killed herself. Haber didn’t even...
