You’re Going To Fake It After All



  In his youth, the grandson of John Philip Sousa made large sums of money as a guest bandleader.  He knew it wasn’t because of his talent. Since he shared the same name as the great American composer and conductor, he knew that is what impressed the crowds. His invites were about his name not his abilities. He knew these because he could not read a single note of sheet music. 


  He wasn’t the first of the last person to lean on their heritage rather than their abilities.  Just because you carry a name, however, doesn’t mean you are the real thing.

"Many will say to Me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?' And then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you; DEPART FROM ME, YOU WHO PRACTICE LAWLESSNESS.'
Matthew 7:22-23
  Lots of people call themselves Christian. Lots of people claim a heritage with the Lord. But that claim isn’t what will get us a place in the kingdom, it is what we do.

"Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter.
Matthew 7:21
  The crowds may cheer for us. The funds may come rolling in. But the true name bearers of Jesus Christ aren’t found by those things. They are found in those that do his will. The ones that are keeping his commandments, not just faking their way thru it.


  Fakes will found out in the end. He will know or not know us not by the name we claim but the life we live.

Until Midnight

    In Acts 20, there is the tragicomic event surrounding a young man by the name of Eutychus. He did what a lot of folks before and after him did, he fell asleep during a sermon. Unfortunately, he was setting in in the third story window at the time. So instead of nodding off and hitting the pew in front of him, he fell to his death. The good news was the apostle Paul was delivering the sermon and had the ability to bring him back.       I don’t know, however, if we can judge Eutychus too harshly. The sermon had gone on till midnight. Paul wouldn’t finish it up till daybreak. That’s a long lesson. I know some folks that might want to jump out of a window if I had a lesson that long, yet these Christians wanted to be there to hear Paul.   Don’t get me wrong, I’m not pushing for all night sermons but I think we might need to adopt these folks' dedication. The Name Written On It

  There was a rancher in Oregon named Bill Brown. He was known for often writing checks on any paper available. This included things like envelopes, soup can labels, and newspaper margins. Now, most banks wouldn’t accept his kind of check, but Bill Brown was a very rich, therefore very important customer, so the banks in his area would cash the checks without question.   It wasn’t the surface the name was written on that mattered, but the name written on the surface.  In 2 nd Corinthians 4, Paul speaks about the privilege we have because of our involvement in the ministry of Christ. Yet he warns us that we, “ do not preach ourselves but Christ Jesus as Lord, and ourselves as your bond-servants for Jesus' sake . In fact, he tells us “But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, so that the surpassing greatness of the power will be of God and not from ourselves ”  It is not about the person the message is written on but the person that has written the message....

Body Talk

  We often use part of our body to emphasize certain actions.   Put your back into it!   Use your head!   Open your ears!  It is a way that we illustrate the need for more focus and effort.  In Romans 10:10, Paul does something similar. Here he writes, “ for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation .  You can just believe in a lackluster way; you must do it from the heart. You can just think that Jesus is Lord, you must utter the words.  That is why true faith isn’t just something you settle into; you have to mean it. A faith that is basic won’t save you.  We hear the Bible speak of people who believed in Jesus but were not confessing Him(John 12:42). People who knew the truth but didn’t want to change (Mark 10:22). Some say they believe in him yet don’t accept baptism(Mark 16:16).  Is this really faith? A least it’s not the faith t...
