When you were in school, how long did you remember something after the lesson was over, especially once you got into Christmas break? Most teachers will tell you the first couple of week after the break is spent trying to get kids to remember all that they forgot over the holiday.
That is what is so remarkable about the 10-year-old Tilly Smith of England, who not only remembered something during Christmas but used that info to save a bunch of people.
Tilly and her family were on vacation in Phuket, Thailand, when the ocean waves began increasing and hitting the shore a little closer with each wave. Everyone else on the beach was dumbstruck by the change in the ocean, but Tilly knew better. Only two weeks prior, she had learned about tsunamis in her geography class. Tilly frantically told her parents that a tsunami was on its way. Her parent began to pack up and leave but not before they mentioned their suspicions to a security guard. The guard then proceeded to clear about 100 beachgoers off the shore.
The tsunami soon crashed in taking about a quarter-million lives in 13 countries, but zero lives on Tilly's beach. A little knowledge saved those folks.
You might not be able to save a life with your knowledge but you could save a soul! If you ever spent more than few weeks in church, I’ve bet you heard the plans of salvation. We end ever sermon with an invitation that spells it out. It has become so commonplace that we use it as a cue to pull out the songbook. We may have already responded, so what is it for us?
It is a lesson we may need to learn if we are to warn other!
You see each of us are going to be around others that will be facing the tsunamis of life. When the waves come crashing down, and people are swept away, drowning in despair. They will be crying out for help for answers.
Will we be prepared and remember what they need to hear?
…always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you,…
1st Peter 3:15
God commands for salvation are so simple even a child can remember them, but have we committed to memory that lifesaving message? Can we open a Bible and point to those scriptures? Do we have an answer when someone asks us about our Faith?
A little knowledge could save some folks!
