Monday Morning Scattershooting

Monday Morning Scattershooting while wondering, If these “blast points are too accurate for Sandpeople” and “Only Imperial Stormtroopers are so precise” (I have seen Stormtroppers shoot and they couldn't hit a main character in 3 movies, even slow moving androids) how bad of a shot are Sandpeople?

It seems everyone is talking about the Supreme Court decision on same sex marriage.  It got me thinking about the main argument I hear, even sadly among Christian, of the need to re define marriage.  Basically, that it is unfair to not extend family and spousal benefits to those that have non traditional unions.  So we need to re define marriage so as not to cause harm to people. Since we now expect our health care and retirement benefits to come from the government or employers, people can be kept from necessary services since they are not technically “married”.  So government needs to make a new definition to help people.
I not going to get into that except to say, why is it that we have become so dependent on the government and others to take care of us?  Once we began thinking that the state defined marriage, we also let it control it.  I see that thinking among the atheist, since to them the highest judge sits on the Supreme Court.  But to the Christian, the highest judge sits on his throne in heaven.  It’s his judgment that will matter most.
Our newest false god that is worshiped is society.  It give your health (care), tell you what is right and wrong (laws), keep you happy (entertainment), and give you blessing (state aid, benefits, welfare).  We worship (look at how these issues take over our lives) and sacrifice (taxes, work for, donate to the political cause) in order to be in its good favor.  When we don’t do what it says, it will change the weather (global warming), take away our children (indoctrination) or punish us (lawsuits).
I remember when Abram saved Lot he was offered by the King of Sodom great blessing, but refused them. The reason Abram said to the king of Sodom was , "I have sworn to the LORD God Most High, possessor of heaven and earth that I will not take a thread or a sandal thong or anything that is yours, for fear you would say, 'I have made Abram rich.'(Genesis 14:22-23) I wonder if the people of God should think the same way about things our world wants to offer us.  We need to keep them and us from thinking that good things in our lives are because of the government, or the employer, or by our society. They come from God and we need to remember that.

That’s just a stereotype.  Normally that means what the person is saying is an untrue generalization.  Stereotypes are used to categorize a group of people.  We dismiss them because we say they are untrue.  But for a stereotype to come into common use it has to have some truth in it.  Preachers are all rich handsome fellows, isn’t a common stereotype[*] because it isn’t typical enough to catch on. I was reading Titus 1:12-13 when I thought about this.  It says, “One of themselves, a prophet of their own, said, "Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons."  This testimony is true. For this reason reprove them severely so that they may be sound in the faith”.  Here the stereotype for a Cretan was a lazy, lying, base person.  The bigger problem was it was true!  Christians today get stereotyped.  Some of it is unfair but some of it is true.  Preachers, youth ministers, elders, preacher’s kids all have stereotypes.  Maybe instead of complaining about it, we work to make sure they are not true. Don’t be the know it all preacher, don’t be the unprofessional youth minister, don’t be the out of touch elder or the wild preacher’s kid. Be something different. Act in such a way that it makes the stereotype obsolete.

Finally, never trust a mathematician with a graph, they’re always plotting something

Until Midnight

In Acts 20, there is the tragicomic event surrounding a young man by the name of Eutychus. He did what a lot of folks before and after him did, he fell asleep during a sermon. Unfortunately, he was setting in in the third story window at the time. So instead of nodding off and hitting the pew in front of him, he fell to his death. The good news was the apostle Paul was delivering the sermon and had the ability to bring him back.       I don’t know, however, if we can judge Eutychus too harshly. The sermon had gone on till midnight. Paul wouldn’t finish it up till daybreak. That’s a long lesson. I know some folks that might want to jump out of a window if I had a lesson that long, yet these Christians wanted to be there to hear Paul.   Don’t get me wrong, I’m not pushing for all night sermons but I think we might need to adopt these folks' dedication. They knew that Paul was only in town for a limited time only and they were determined to ...

The Gift You Give Yourself

I always hated buying gifts for my Mom. If I got her something like a new set of pans, it was like saying “Here’s something you can use to go make me something to eat”. A gift for her was seemingly a gift for me.   There are however gifts you give that benefit you more than the receiver. For example, forgiveness. When you give it, you are giving it to yourself as much as you are giving it to them. Jesus said that when we forgive others it means God is forgiving us our wrongs (Matthew 6:14-15).  I once read: “ Heaven is where everyone's forgiven. Hell is where nobody's forgiven.  So, when we forgive we pull heaven down into our lives.  When we withhold forgiveness, we pull hell up into our lives ” Give yourself something nice today, Forgive.

Mysterious Ways

William Cowper didn’t see any reason to live.   He decided that he’d jump off the bridge over the Thames. So, he called a cab to take him there.   But that night in 1763, a thick fog enveloped London. It was so thick the cab driver couldn’t find the bridge and couldn’t even find the way to take William home. In frustration, he ordered the driver to stop and get out to get his bearings. He walked up to the nearest house to read the number and it was William's house. Gone now were William’s thoughts of suicide and instead a new idea came into his head. So, he went in and wrote these words: God moves in mysterious ways His wonders to perform. He plants his footsteps in the sea And rides upon the storm.  You fearful saints, fresh courage take; The clouds you so much dread Are big with mercy and shall break In blessings on your head.     I sometimes wish we could see all the ways God watches over us when need it. There are...
