John Barrier walked into the Old National bank in downtown Spokane, Washington to cash a $100 check. When he went to leave, the parking attendant charged him 60 cents for parking but told John that if he was a customer he could get the teller to stamp the ticket and it would be no charge. So John went back inside and asked if the bank would validate the parking fee. The teller told him that the bank would only valid parking on transactions and his cashing a check didn’t count. John suspected that her reluctance had more to do with his appearance than the banks policy. He had just come from his job refurbishing old building and was in dirty work clothes. He asked to see a manager and after he took one look at John, he also turned him down. John reply was simple, “If you don’t need me, I don’t need you” and then proceed to withdraw all his money, over 1 million dollars of it.
Even though he didn’t look like it at moment John Barrier was a very wealthy man. The banks rush to judgment lost them a significant account. It is a valuable lesson for us to learn as well, things are not always what they appear on the surface. A person may appear to be something, but we never really know until we examine close enough to know the truth. Jesus tells us in John 7:24 "Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment."
