A friend of mine has a pet peeve that made me think. She hates when someone uses the phrase, “I could care less” when describing something they have absolutely no interest in. She explains that this phrase really means that you do care but not completely, you could care less, so you at least have some care since you could have less of it.
Lots of people misuse the phrase but it made me think that it might fit our attitudes in certain situations. For example, the way some treat Bible class. We acknowledge the importance of Bible study but never make it a priority. Or perhaps, how we treat some church program. We want it to work, but not enough to put out any extra effort on our part. We are stuck in the middle, not against it but not enough for it to make it succeed. This lukewarm attitude is more dangerous than we may think (see Revelation 3:15-16) Rather than caring less, let’s see ways to put more care into what we are doing.
