We Don’t Have To Beat Them

Reggie Miller is one of my all-time favorite basketball players. All my buddies loved Michael Jordan but I was a Reggie man. I think it was his ability to shoot the three. He had the high arching shot that seemed to rain down into the basket. The reason for his shot was his sister, it was the only way he could get over her.   Reggie was the younger sibling to his big-time basketball star sister, Cheryl Miller. She was an All-America for four straight years at Riverside Polytechnic High School. Reggie was just known as Cheryl’s little brother.   Finally, in high school, he had his chance to shine.  Midway through his sophomore year, he became a starter on the varsity team. On that first night he got the start, he had a big game. His family had gone to Cheryl’s game, so when they picked him up it was time to brag.   Reggie recapped the victory. “I got to start, even went for forty”. Cheryl was happy for him. “That’s great” she exclaimed! The...

Will Remember Your Name

Maya Lin wanted to build a wall. Her wall was not practical but a monument. She created it as part of a college architecture class that challenged students to make an entry for the national design competition for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Her professor only gave her a B-. The politicians didn’t care much for it. They claimed it was too simple and an affront to the soldiers. Yet it stands today as one of the most powerful memorials. It’s not just the wall, it’s what is on it. Names. 58,000 half-inch-high names of the dead in chronological order.  Lin wanted people to know the names of those that never came back.   Nehemiah wanted to build a wall. It wasn’t a monument but a practical necessity. Not only to protect his hometown but to unify the people in it. The politicians didn’t care much for his efforts. They undermined and intimidated the effort. But Nehemiah didn’t stop till the work was done even after the wall was built. The book of the Bible that bear...

A Good Man Still Needs To Find

He was a good man. He had a good family. He prayed. He gave. He treated those different than him well. He served his country. His community respected him. He was “ a righteous and God-fearing man ”   Yet there was still something he needed to do to be saved. Now there was a man at Caesarea named Cornelius, a centurion of what was called the Italian cohort, a devout man and one who feared God with all his household, and gave many alms to the Jewish people and prayed to God continually . Acts 10:1-2    So when the word of God came to him, he listened. He didn’t just listen, he obeyed. He went searching for the answer he needed. He found it in Joppa in a man named Simon. So he brought him to his house and gathered his family to hear “ all that you have been commanded by the Lord " (Acts 10:33). So Simon Peter told the story of Jesus and the need to believe in him for salvation.   Cornelius knew the words Peter spoke to him would be the ...

There Is Too Much Let Me Sum Up

Ever read one of those program descriptions for a movie or TV show that is completely true yet somehow completely inadequate. Oh, it may show some elements of the plot yet it doesn’t come close in encapsulating the whole. It may fill the space, but it doesn’t seem to make you want to stop down and watch.  I guess since you have only a few lines, it hard to get everything in. Could you imagine doing it so something as complex as God?   Yet in Exodus 34 we see the just that. In verses 6 and 7 we read: "The LORD, the LORD God, compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in lovingkindness and truth; who keeps lovingkindness for thousands, who forgives iniquity, transgression and sin; yet He will by no means leave the guilty unpunished, visiting the iniquity of fathers on the children and on the grandchildren to the third and fourth generations."   God who made the worlds and is so far beyond us in every way, is somehow summed up ...
