A Debt That Could Never Be Repaid It Forward

Edwin Booth was one of the greatest actors of his day. Coming from a famous acting family, Edwin toured throughout the United States and the major capitals of Europe performing Shakespearean plays. Some theatrical historians consider him the greatest American actor, and the greatest Hamlet, of the 19th century.   But that fame turned against him because of His brother John. The brothers had shared the stages from time to time but they, like many families of their day, disagreed over the Civil War. As the war went on, John increasingly quarreled with Edwin, who declined to make stage appearances in the South and refused to listen to John denunciations of the North and Lincoln. John Wilkes Booth showed his hatred when he went to Ford theater in April of 1865 and assassinated the President.   The assassination forced Edwin Booth to abandon the stage for many months. He disowned his brother, refusing to have John's name spoken in his house. Yet the damage was done....

Wasting With Bated Breath

If you yelled for 8 years, 7 months and 6 days you would have produced enough sound energy to heat one cup of coffee. It hardly seems worth it.   Yet it seems today we still do a lot of yelling. Every few weeks another cause or issue pops up that forces us to raise our voices. We must express our anger. So we post on the internet, rant in the cafes, bellyache in the break room. We can’t hardly seem to wait to yell about something. But is it worth it?   Let’s consider some Bible verses: Proverbs 18:2   A fool does not delight in understanding, But only in revealing his own mind. Proverbs 15:1-2   A gentle answer turns away wrath, But a harsh word stirs up anger.  The tongue of the wise makes knowledge acceptable, But the mouth of fools spouts folly. Proverbs 29:22   An angry man stirs up strife, And a hot-tempered man abounds in transgression. James 1:19-20    This you know, my beloved brethren. But everyone mus...

No Shirt No Shoes No Salvation?

When he was vice president of the U.S., Thomas Jefferson, attired in soiled working clothes, tried to get a room in Baltimore's finest hotel. The manager, a fellow by the name of Boyden, took one look at Jefferson's attire and turned him away.  A moment later, someone informed Boyden of who he had just dismissed. The manager horrified immediately dispatched a servant to find Jefferson and offer him a room, as many rooms, as he wished. After he heard the message, Jefferson, replied: "Tell Boyden that I value his good intentions highly, but if he has no room for a dirty farmer, he shall have none for the vice president."   There are times when the church take the same approach as Boyden did. For example in James’ letter we see him scolding the church just for that: For if a man comes into your assembly with a gold ring and dressed in fine clothes, and there also comes in a poor man in dirty clothes, and you pay special attention to the one who is wearing th...

Why His Ship Was Full

In May of 1940, German forces were on the verge of capturing the entire Allied army. Nearly surrounded, British and French soldiers fought their way to the coastal town of Dunkirk in a desperate bid to escape, but there was no place to go. Trapped between the sea and advancing German army, there seemed to be little hope.  Yet hope came in the form of the British citizenry. The British Admiralty put out the call for every small craft it could find to help stage an emergency evacuation . Yachts, fishing boats, motor launches, tug-boats, any vessel that could pull men off the beaches. Despite constant attack by German bombers, this motley fleet managed to rescue more than three hundred thousand men and bring them back to England. Winston Churchill called it a “miracle of deliverance.”   One of those that answered the call was a sixty-six-year-old retiree named Charles Lightoller. He navigated his small motor yacht to the battle and he crammed more than ...
