The Voice Said to Listen Up

One the most spectacular events in the life of Jesus is the transfiguration. Jesus shown in his radiant glory. An appearance by two long passed heroes of the Jews. A voice from heaven. Of course, the disciples slept thru it. Now Peter and his companions had been overcome with sleep; but when they were fully awake, they saw His glory and the two men standing with Him. Luke 9:32   When they finally come to, Peter in a very Peter-like way speaks up. Let’s build three shelter or tabernacles for the three dignitaries. And why not? These are major figures of faith. Moses was the great lawgiver. One of whom it is said, “ no prophet has risen in Israel like Moses ”. Elijah. The hero of Mt. Carmel that stood up to the prophets of Baal. A man whose name was synonymous as a spokesman of God.  These would be people you would respect, men you would listen to.  But then the Voice from Heaven cries out. Jesus is my Son, Listen to him! Peter wanted to put the thre...

The Other Person That Heard the Sermon

In the twenty-fourth chapter of Acts we read of a sermon that was delivered to Felix; But some days later Felix arrived with Drusilla, his wife who was a Jewess, and sent for Paul and heard him speak about faith in Christ Jesus. But as he was discussing righteousness, self-control and the judgment to come, Felix became frightened and said, "Go away for the present, and when I find time I will summon you." Acts 24:24-25   Although Felix was just looking for a payday (vs 26) this sermon seemed to have an effect on him.  It probably bothered him since Felix didn’t have much self-control and wouldn’t seemly fare well in the judgment to come.  Felix was there with his third wife Drusilla, a woman he had seduced away from her first husband.  These convoluted marriages seem to be all the rage in these ruling circles (Mark 6:17),  but the truth Paul preached didn’t jive with this type lifestyle.  So Felix sent him away for a mor...

The Thing I Can’t Do

I got to thinking the other day that the things in my life that cause me the most stress are the things I can’t do. Waiting on other people’s response, a problem I can’t solve on my own, a task I’m not equipped to perform.  If it is up to me I can do it or not do it and it really doesn’t bother me either way since I have the control. But when I don’t have control, when I too weak, too incompetent, too dependent, it bothers me since it emphasizes my weakness. I stress since I’m so helpless to do the thing I know needs doing.   I wonder if that is why the Scriptures tell us over and over again to trust in the saving power of Jesus. If there is anything we can’t do it is to save ourselves by ourselves. We are too sinful, too weak, too lacking. I can try to my utmost but I will always be lacking. Yet with the sacrifice of Christ, I can make it.  For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did: sending His own Son in the likenes...

Bricks Without Straw

I’m afraid that in too many of our youth programs in the church today we are forcing our youth workers to make bricks without straw.   You remember the phrase from the book of Exodus.  As a form of punishment for Moses meddling in Egypt’s affairs, Pharaoh made the Israelite keep making the same quota of bricks but without providing the raw material they needed.  Now not only did they have to make the bricks but also had to assemble the material needed as well.   For our youth workers, it goes like this. As a child reaches “youth group age” workers are tasked with assembling them into Christians able to handle the worldly pressure on them.  Yet they don’t have the parts to work with.  They can’t teach deeper principles of scripture since the kids are lacking basic Bible knowledge.  They can’t challenge young people to service since the young people have never been expected to do anything for themselves.  They must be parents si...

Word Got Out

A four letter word meaning “one of the U.S.,” read the clue. The answer? “Utah.” Five letters: “Red Indian on the Missouri.” That one is “Omaha.” Normal enough crossword clues, that is unless the clues are in the Daily Telegraph, a British paper, in May of 1944. This is just months before the super-secret invasion of Normandy, where troops are set to land on beaches code-named Utah and Omaha.   A panic sets in for military officials. Could a spy be leaking information via the crossword in the paper? The investigation seems to be leading that way. Two years prior, the same author named Leonard Dawe, had been interrogated when one of his clues predicted what was the name of a port that the allies were about to unsuccessfully raid. It seemed the German had been forewarned.  The more they looked more suspect clues they saw. A review of earlier crossword puzzles showed that Dawe had used the code words for the three other beaches — Gold, Juno, and Sword....
