The Man That Saved The Streak

Some records might never be broken.   One of those records, the consecutive win streak in college football, is held by the University of Oklahoma.  From 1953 to 1957 the Sooners won an amazing 47 games in a row.  That streak, however, might have died in its infancy it not for a player named Johnny Crouch.  It was in the TCU/Oklahoma game of 1954.  As the game wound down, Johnny Crouch, a tight end, burst open in the end zone making a sliding catch of an underthrown ball. The officials raised up their arms in the signal for a touchdown.   But moments later the men in stripes were huddled up discussing the play.  Fifty thousand Oklahoma fans waited in hushed agony.  The call would decide if they won or lost.  Don’t think there wasn’t a worry.  One of the officials making the call was a TCU alum.  Then the call… the touchdown was nullified and the crowd went crazy.  OU had just won the game 21-16! ...

The Sound of Silence

There is a room at Orfield Laboratories in Minneapolis, Minnesota that will drive you mad.  One person has been able to withstand the room for 45 minutes, but most can't last more than thirty.  Some people can't even make it inside the room at all.  It’s not the color of the walls or the decorations that drive people bonkers. In fact, it isn’t what the room has that causes the effect; it is what it doesn’t have, sound.   This room holds the Guinness World Record for the world's quietest place. The anechoic chamber, which means "no echo", is able to absorb 99.99% of sounds. The sound level in the room is negative 9.4 decibels, but humans can hear sounds only above zero decibels (an average quiet room is about 30 decibels).  It is so quiet that many people find it unbearable to stay inside since and it often disorients people or causes them to hallucinate. Other senses are amplified without the reflection of sound off the walls, and without t...

Not the John You Would Think I’d Be Talking About

Most people don’t think a lot about toilets until it quits working.  However, how humans dispose of waste is a very important issue.  At least 2.4 billion people, 40% of the world's population, lack access to adequate sanitation.  In the developing world, 80% of disease is due to poor sanitation.  Those diseases claim the lives of nearly 6,000 children a day – that is over two million deaths a year.  The inability of people to know and follow sanitary practices plague the world today and not only in developing countries.  Yet many government agencies overlook the problem. No one wants to talks about this ‘dirty’ issue.  It’s interesting to me, however, that this is an issue that the Scriptures deal with. Deuteronomy 23:13 instructs the Israelites  to have latrines outside the camp and make sure waste is cover up (This prevents run off into local water supplies) Leviticus gives instruction on washing pots and utensils so the...

He Is Much Better Than Me

As comedian Demetri Martin put it:  “ I heard this guy on the subway say "I'm good at checkers" ...which is like saying "I'm not good at a lot of things ”   People tend to brag.  The funny thing is people brag about everything, even the things that are nothing to brag about.  Actions that make them look foolish, matters no one else really cares about, behavior they should be ashamed of not proud of.   We all want to be noticed even. Like little kids, we seek attention even if it isn’t the right kind of attention. Boasting is a way to elevate ourselves in at least some fashion.   Which makes Paul’s statement in 2 nd Corinthians 11:30 all that more interesting. If I have to boast, I will boast of what pertains to my weakness . 2 nd Corinthians 11:30   If Paul has to speak about himself it’s not the things that make him great. And he had plenty of that. Rather, he would speak of his weakness, the things he struggled with, his m...

Worth Your Weight In Gold

When we use the word talent, we tend to think of a skill or ability. Perhaps an inborn aptitude, that allows us to succeed in an endeavor. That modern usage is one that has a biblical root.  In Matthew 25 Jesus tells a parable of a man that gave to his servant’s talents. The talents here were measures of money. A talent was ancient weight measurement that varied over time and cultures. It was generally thought to have originated as an approximation to about the weight of a person. So a talent of any precious metal would have been worth quite a bit.  Our modern take come from the fact the master gives to each servant according to his ability. However, I think this take misses an important point. The ability isn’t the focus, the usage is. Even the one talent man was given a hefty amount.    Too many folks dismiss their function in the kingdom thinking they are lacking in a ‘talent’ but each of us, no matter our abilities, have been given by grea...
