When Are We Really Closer To God?

In Psalm 19, David starts by pointing out that the very nature of creation is a wordless tribute to God and His power. Then in verse seven, he changes the focus from the works of God to the word of God. A seeming abrupt change but it’s not the only one.   David also changes at how he refers to God. In the first six verses, he uses the general name for God, one that anyone of any religion might use, but when talking about the word of the Lord he uses the personal name of God given to Moses from the burning bush. There is a message in that.      Often you will hear people remark that they find God not in a place of worship but in nature. It is certainly true that his creation is evidence of God (Romans 1:20) it is, in essence, an impersonal way of knowing him. Yet to listen to the Word of God, having His nature expressed thru his own law, is a much deeper way to connect with him. Rather than just catching a glimpse of Him, You see God much more cle...

Just A Moment?

Every preacher has one great sermon, that doesn’t mean he is a great preacher. A student can ace a test; it doesn’t mean he is going to pass the course. An athlete can have a great year, but that doesn’t mean he is going to the hall of fame.   In his autobiography of his stand-up career, Steve Martin had this to say: It was easy to be great. Every entertainer has a night when everything is clicking. These nights are accidental and statistical: Like lucky cards in poker, you can count on them occurring over time. What was hard was to be good, consistently good, night after night, no matter what the abominable circumstances .   Yet when it comes to faith some think differently. Faith is a moment. A once and done kind of thing. In the right place, at a certain time, when the mood is right, I will have faith and then that’s all I need. I really felt the presence of God. I was on a spiritual high. I was moved.  Faith is momentary.   That, ho...

Everyone Welcome! (For A While Anyway)

I’ve had people argue with me (maybe better said at me), that the church can’t exclude anyone. Now I not talking about checking IDs at the door before worship services, but rather that a person must remain in the fellowship no matter the actions that are involved in.  Since we all are sinners, it would be the height of hypocrisy for us to suggest that someone in error could be kept away. It wouldn’t be loving! No real Christian would ever make a stand that might keep someone from being a part of the saints.   However the Bible is full or reason to exclude someone from the church, such as; A person that lives disorderly and refuses to work to provide for themselves (2 Thessalonians 3:6-10) One that causes division and hindrances (Romans16:17) A person that refuses to repent of sin (Matthew 18:17) A person engaged in obvious immoral behavior (1 st Corinthians 5:11-13) Those that claim Christianity yet exhibits very non-Christian behavior (2 nd Timot...

Godpiling

Will Rodgers said, “ There is nothing as easy as denouncing ... It don’t take much to see that something is wrong but it does take some eyesight to see what will put it right again. ”  Dale Carnegie's take was “ Any fool can criticize, complain, and condemn—and most fools do. But it takes character and self-control to be understanding and forgiving. ” Ben Franklin remarks a similar refrain, “ I will speak ill of no man, not even in matter of truth; but rather excuse the faults I hear charged upon others, and upon proper occasion speak all the good I know of everybody .”   What were these wise men trying to tell us? That if we think we are helping a problem by pointing it out to others, we’re not.   If all you want to do is all your two cents to the mess, please keep the change.   It is among the weakest, pettiest, and unproductive pursuits to dogpile on a problem. Anybody can see the problem. Anyone can show outrage against a wrong action. Eve...
