It’s Not Hidden Behind The Firewall

Let me suggest a new lyric for an old favorite song: Oh be careful little finger what you click Oh be careful little finger what you type For the Father up above Is looking down in love Oh be careful little one what you post   We wouldn’t lie to our friends but we might post a story that’s not quite true.  We don’t gossip but we share the “news” stories that reek of it.  We would never insult or demean a person to their face but we ‘troll’ and ‘flame’ online.  We would never boast or be vain but we will Instagram our face and possessions.   The Internet often fools us into thinking the screen is a mask, which obscures what we are doing. That mask is an illusion, rather than conceal it reveals. As Oscar Wilde said “ Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask, and he will tell you the truth .”   We need to be very careful how we participate in this growing cyber world. Many well-meaning peo...

All Eyes On Me

Recently the social media site Facebook launched Facebook Live. Like other platforms, it offered users a chance to broadcast to the world events from their daily lives. Everyone could be famous. However, the fame that has been garnered has been more infamy than acclaim. Teens abusing a mentally challenged boy. Athletes recording private events. It seems in the desire for fame people will do terrible and foolish things   It reminds me of an actor named John. John came from an acting family. His father was famous thespian, despite a drinking problem. His brothers both made a name for themselves on the stage, especially his older brother Edwin. John was obsessed with fame.  He told his sister, " Fame, fame, fame I must have fame!”   John was able to make a career on the stage. His acting was mediocre but his good looks and physical presence kept him employed. But John longed for something more, he wanted to be known and remember as a hero, as someone grea...

Who Is Rooting Against Us?

This last bowl season something caught my attention.  Several of my friends remarked in anger and frustration that the given announcers of the game were biased against their team.  Now this wasn’t just one game or one team but different people talking about different games with different announcers.   It wasn’t the how the broadcaster spoke, if he was understandable or that he made errors that got my friends worked up into a lather but rather that he didn’t think their team was the better of the two teams. This was an injustice and unfair!   I couldn’t understand why it was such a bother. It doesn’t change anything. Your team doesn’t play any better or worse because of the announcers, the officials are not influenced by it, and the coaches don’t hear it.  Really the worse that can happen is that is you are annoyed and you can always turn down the sound.   Then it hit me. People are passionate about their teams.  If a commentat...

Zero Tolerance

One of those new buzz words we see in our world today is zero tolerance. The school has zero tolerance policy with those that bring a weapon onto the campus. The NFL has a zero-tolerance toward domestic violence. The company has zero tolerance when it comes to discrimination.    The idea is that certain behaviors are so reprehensible that there will be no mercy or acceptance. No grace will be given, any wrong doing will be fully punished, no one will get away with it.   I for one think zero tolerance policies are foolish. Not because people don’t deserve to be punished, but because of the hubris that we think there can be no exceptions. Situations are rarely cut and dry.  There are unseen consequences. Life has more shades of gray than we care to admit.  We don’t know everything or understand all the ins and outs of every possible occurrence. In our desire to punish the guilty we leave no room for redemption.   If there ever w...
