Are You A Sunday Driver?

Could you spot a Christian by the way he drives?  Consider if you will the example of the Old Testament king Jehu in 2 Kings 9-10. Jehu was impetuous military man. He was given the mission by God to purge Ahab’s influence out of Israel and Judah. He did just that, but he went too far. He destroys Ahab line but in an extreme and bloody manner.  For this excessive violence, he would be condemned by the prophet Hosea (Hosea 1:4).   You don’t however need to read everything about him to understand his character, you can just see it one thing he did, how he drove . In 2 nd Kings 9 Jehu is coming for Joram. When Joram’s men see the chariot approaching, they send a messenger but he doesn’t return. King Joram wonders who is driving the chariot, what his intent is and what happened to the messenger. In 2 Kings 9:20, we see the response, “ The watchman reported, "He(the messenger) came even to them, and he did not return; and the driving is like the driving o...

It’s A Brand New Day

It is one of the most depressing books in the Bible. It's very name, Lamentations, means the passionate expression of grief or sorrow.  It is a book about when the worst happens, when the unthinkable happens. It tells of a time when everything lies in ruins, families are split apart; all the things that matter most are totally destroyed. When the carnage and grief are so great there seems nothing left to do but weep. It is a time when it seems all hope is lost.   So it is ironic that in its pages we have one of the most positive, uplifting expressions of hope in the Bible. In Lamentations 3:21-23 we read,  “ This I recall to my mind, Therefore I have hope. The LORD'S lovingkindnesses indeed never cease, For His compassions never fail.  They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness .”       Even in the worst of time, when it feels and looks like God has left his people, and it seems He has had enough of them and...

Nothing Can Stop the Juggernaut

In scriptures, the closest human thing we have to the immovable object was Samson. In battle after battle, nothing could stop him. Not a lion [i] .  Not thirty men [ii] . Not a thousand men [iii] No matter what man came after him, Samson could take them all. But a woman, well that was a different story.   Samson had always had trouble letting the lust of his eyes make his decisions, (Judges 14:1-3; 16:1-3) and it happened again with Delilah. He fell for a woman that cared more for money than for him. So time and time again she attempted to seduce the secret of his strength from him. And he would give her a story. Then lo and behold, his enemies would attack him that exact same way.   You would think he would be smart enough to figure out what was going on and leave her. Maybe he was. Maybe he just didn't care. He was strong enough to get out of whatever trouble would come.   But the day finally came that broke him. It wa...

Can You Do Any Better?

A young boy complained to his father that most of the church hymns were boring to him — too far behind the times, boring tunes, meaningless words. His father put an end to the discussion when he said, “ If you think you can write better hymns, then why don’t you ?” The boy went to his room and wrote his first hymn. This was in 1690; the teenager’s name was Isaac Watts. “ When I Survey The Wondrous Cross ” and “ Joy To The World ” are among the almost 300 hymns written by him [i] . Isaac Watts   It is easy to list the things that are wrong but it is much better to do something about them. In 1 st Peter 4:9-10, we read, “ Be hospitable to one another without complaint. As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another as good stewards of the manifold grace of God .”   Instead of finding fault, lets us our gifts to serve. Most people wait for a glossy embossed invitation before they will volunteer to serve. Instead of that...
